Seeing Through Their Eyes, published in November 2022, is Volume 21 in the annual SCN anthology series, Real Women Write.
In this issue, we turn our attention to making positive change in the face of looming global challenges. In addition to the COVID pandemic, we are facing climate change and its growing impacts, the Russian war on Ukraine and the resulting increased global famine, economic fall-out from the pandemic and corporate greed, escalating gun violence and racial tensions. People are nearly numb to disasters.
Yet we’re learning about what humans can do to make things better. Included in this volume are 75 pieces of prose and poetry by 49 member-authors, all of them considering the quality of empathy. That human capability prevents us from growing numb and leads to compassion for others. Here you will surely find responses that speak to you.
As renowned author Marita Golden says in her Foreword, “The narratives in this collection dive into the deep end of the pool, where the water is wide and deep and where you discover what you are made of. What you can do. These essays urge you to turn away from your cell phone, television, or computer screen, to hear the real breaking news—that we are in this life and in this world together. We must love one another. These narratives show how we can love one another.”
As always, SCN understands the value of diversity, and we celebrate it in Seeing Through Their Eyes with an array of unique approaches to the subject of empathy, forming a readable chorus that creates unanticipated harmony from individual voices. Together, this extraordinary group of writings offers creative insight into 21st century women’s experiences, and it will have impact for years to come, serving as a significant addition to the herstory and literature of our time.
Marita Golden is the award-winning author of twenty works of fiction and nonfiction, most recently The Strong Black Woman: How a Myth Endangers the Physical and Mental Health of Black Women. https://maritagolden.com
